FAQs: What you need to know about the PolyPlumb® Enhanced range

With a new range comes some understandable queries. Here’s a breakdown of the most common ones!

Grey and white fittings – What’s the difference?

Nothing! Both grey and white PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings are manufactured to standards BS 7291 Parts 1, 2 & 3 and to the same tolerances and dimensions.

How long are PolyPlumb® Enhanced guaranteed?

50 years! So, you can trust these various fittings to last for decades.

I’m using copper pipes…Will PolyPlumb® Enhanced work with these?

Yes! PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings (not including the PolyPlumb® Enhanced In-Cert® as a haptic click will not be felt if you twist the pipe in the fitting) are compatible with copper pipe. However, you must ensure a clean cut is made on the pipe using a rotary or wheel cutter and deburr the cut end before inserting the pipe into the fitting.

Can PolyPlumb® plastic plumbing be used in hard and soft water areas?

PolyPlumb Enhanced fittings and Pro-Straight pipe (made with polybutylene) can be used in both hard and soft water regions. Not only is the Enhanced range unaffected by water quality, but the material also has chemical resistance to scale buildup and corrosion. So, you can rely on this for long-lasting, efficient plumbing. Moreover, PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings are pre-lubricated. If a joint is being disassembled and the ‘O’ ring is dry, re-lubricate it with a WRAS-approved aerosol lubricant.

Furthermore, polybutylene pipe is compatible with compression fittings. However, you need to follow the guidelines for secure installation. Make sure to:

  • Use a pipe stiffener (ensures the pipe maintains its shape and prevents the pipe from collapsing under the fitting’s pressure)
  • Use copper olives instead of brass for optimal compression (it’s a softer metal that allows for better compression and a more secure fit)

Additionally, as with copper pipes, plastic pipes are at risk of freezing. They may have more resistance to it than copper, but they can still be affected as frozen water expands, leading the plastic pipes to stretch. So, ensure you insulate the pipes and fittings as you would with copper to prevent freezing and maintain a reliable water supply.

Protocols for pressure testing PolyPlumb® Enhanced installations

A standard practice and one that you need to perform. Please be aware that the steps below are not a guarantee of complete, correct installation. This test only ensures the pipes have been inserted into the fittings passed the ‘O’ ring and grab ring.

Pipes that are scored or scratched during installation can lead to weeps. These may not be highlighted with a high-pressure test alone. Only test pipe and fittings. Isolate any parts of the system not designed to take these pressures from the test.

You must also fill the system completely with water at an ambient temperature. Ensure all air is expelled from the system.

With the points above in mind, onto the test!

  • Step one: Apply a low-pressure test of 1 bar for 30 minutes and inspect the system for leaks whilst this pressure is applied. If this test is successful and no leaks are present, follow with a high-pressure test (step 2)
  • Step two: Apply a high-pressure test of 18 bar for 30 minutes and repeat inspection for leaks whilst this pressure is applied.
  • Step three: For joint security, you can check this visually and by tugging at joints or using the In-Cert® feedback technology on PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings to confirm the pipe is fully inserted.

Process for reusing PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings

PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings are reusable except for the stainless steel grab ring. Installing the fitting always requires a new grab ring. Here is the process.

  • Step one: Remove the cap nut and carefully pull the pipe out.
  • Step two: Cut off the grab ring with side cutters and peel the ring from the pipe
  • Step three: Insert a new grab ring into the fitting and reassemble as needed.

Important: If any scores or scratches are on the pipe, cut it back to a clean section before you reinstall it.


Insertion depths for jointing PolyPlumb® Enhanced

Insertion depths will depend on the ‘K’ mark on the pipe. So, here are the steps to securely install your PolyPlumb® Enhanced fitting.

  • Step one: Find the ‘K’ mark on the pipe and cut the pipe to that exact point, then examine the cut end for any scratches or imperfections.
  • Step two: Place the In-Cert® pipe stiffener into the cut end of the pipe and gently push the pipe into the fitting until it reaches the next ‘k’ mark.
  • Step three: Slightly push the pipe and twist it to ensure it’s fitted securely.

Note: If an In-Cert® pipe stiffener is used, a ‘hapti click’ should be felt.

Your joint should now be sorted and fitting securely installed!
